New Sprint Pact in Ohio; Offer Sweetened in Florida

Bargainers reached tentative agreement on behalf of 600 Sprint workers in Ohio, and Sprint units in Missouri and Kansas ratified pacts reached earlier, CWA Vice President T.O. Moses reported. Meanwhile, CWA’s Sprint-Florida unit received a new offer which will be submitted to the membership for mail ballot ratification.

The Kansas unit ratified 71-9 and Missouri, 200-34, Moses said March 14.

The Ohio pact, similar to the three-year agreements ratified by other units, offers wage gains of 3 percent annually, with pension and savings plan changes in line with wage increases. If ratified by April 4, wage gains will be paid retroactively to the March 1 contract expiration date, Moses said.

Under the agreement, Business Service Specialist and Marketing Installer titles will be changed to Business Service Technician. Upon certification at the BST Level II, employees will receive a $1 per hour differential and at BST III, $1.50.

The current indemnity medical plan will continue with maximum deductibles increased $25 each year. Out-of-pocket stop-loss will increase to $1,350 by end of term.

“The Ohio membership expressed a desire to have a contract in place in the event of a merger with MCI,” Moses said.

In Florida, where the membership earlier rejected a settlement, the company submitted a new offer that includes a joint union-management committee to review overtime limits and a $300 ratification bonus.

Bargaining will soon get underway for Sprint units in New Jersey and Virginia. The contract expires in New Jersey May 14 and in Virginia, May 15.
