New Incidents Spur Anti-Rage Campaign

CWA and US Airways management are continuing their joint campaign to alert passengers, airport security and airport management to the federal law prohibiting assaults and attacks on passenger service agents, and the tough penalties that law requires.

Several US Airways locals are working with travel magazines and other media to focus attention on what is a serious concern for agents, especially during the busy holiday travel season.

CWA Local 1171 President John Hanson and Secretary-Treasurer Jane McGrane outlined some of the airport rage incidents that have occurred at airports in the Northeast and stressed that US Airways management was committed to the prosecution of these offenses to the greatest extent.

At Logan Airport in Boston, an acting shift manager was grabbed by the necktie and punched in the face several times by an irate passenger before another passenger intervened. In Manchester, N.H., an agent was assaulted in front of the ticket counter, knocked unconscious and suffered permanent hearing loss as a result of the attack. At the Newark, N.J., airport, an agent was assaulted by a passenger in the gate area who grabbed a stapler to use as a weapon against the agent.

The union-management initiative will raise public awareness of the law and call for federal prosecution of all airport rage incidents, with the goal of reducing the number of such assaults.
