Morton Bahr Scholarships Offered for 2002-03

Empire State College, State University of New York, is accepting scholarship applications for the 2002-03 academic year for its unique “distance learning” college scholarship program named in honor of CWA President Morton Bahr.

Three new Bahr scholars will be chosen to join the nine already enrolled in the program, which allows students to complete studies from anywhere in the world using the Internet or, if they prefer, through correspondence.

Full tuition funding toward either two-year or four-year degrees will be continued as long as students maintain satisfactory performance. Empire State offers a wide range of study courses in the liberal arts, including business, technology and labor studies, through its Special Studies Programs for Distance Learning.

Deadline: July 26

Those interested in applying should contact Empire State right away. The deadline for applications is July 26, 2002, and the award decisions will be announced on August 15 for fall enrollment.

The program honors Morton Bahr, who himself is an alumnus of Empire State, for his long-standing commitment to promoting adult education. Bahr has stressed lifelong learning opportunities in contract bargaining with CWA employers over the years, and he was the chair of the Commission for a Nation of Lifelong Learners, which laid out a national agenda to promote lifetime education programs.

The Empire State program is geared toward giving adult workers with full-time jobs an opportunity to pursue college studies in their spare time from home. Many students receive a boost toward their degrees through credit for previous education as well as life experience.

Selection Criteria
Priority for selection is given to CWA members and their families and domestic partners, although the program is open to other workers as well.

Other criteria used by the selection committee include capability of students to be successful in the program; program match with education and career goals; identified financial need; leadership qualities and ethnic and gender diversity.

Application and Program Procedures
Scholars will apply directly to SUNY Empire State College’s Center for Distance Learning, using a special nomination form and application.

Scholarship awards will fully cover tuition, fees and special services and an allowance for study materials and books up to $130 per course.

Students in the program will be eligible for scholarship funding as long as they complete at least one or two courses per semester (four to eight credits). During the first term, scholars must also apply for other federal, state, corporate or union financial aid for which they may be eligible.

Academic Support Services
Bahr scholars receive a personalized program orientation online or over the phone, and they are aided in developing or improving technical skills for distance learning.

Students are assigned a faculty mentor and an instructor for each course and are assisted in completing an individualized assessment of credit-worthy college level learning from work and life experience.

In addition, a Virtual Student Center online offers a wide range of services including help with finding library resources, help with study skills and career assistance.
