Mobilizing Builds at Lucent
At Lucent Technologies, CWA members are stepping up their protests against downsizing and subcontracting. Some 1,700 workers in the small business operation are slated for downsizing with their work to be done by contractors if Lucent gets its way, reported Jim Irvine, CWA vice president for communications and technologies.
CWAers are letting Lucent customers know that soon they will be paying full price for "substandard contract labor" and are urging customers to demand the quality service they expect to receive. "Lucent announced this downsizing to reduce expenses by $300 million so it would look good for Wall Street. We always have to look good for Wall Street," Irvine charged.
Other concerns include the potential for Lucent to shift health care costs to retirees and further downsizing that affects the quality of Lucent operations, he said.
Ongoing actions include rallies and informational picketing, refusing overtime hours and other workplace actions.
