Mobilization Begins with Education

Less than 8.5 percent of private sector workers are covered under a collective bargaining agreement, down from a high of 35 percent in 1954. Twenty states still deny public workers collective bargaining rights.

"Bargaining is tougher because there are fewer of us, and management is deliberately leading the race to the bottom," said CWA Executive Vice President Larry Cohen, urging locals to reach out to their members about the depth of the crisis.

"Taking back the National Labor Relations Act and National Labor Relations Board and restoring them to their original mission of promoting collective bargaining rights will take a long-term, committed effort by millions of informed union members," he stressed. "But if we dare to imagine real workers' rights in this country and we move our energy now to fight for them, we will make a difference."

More than 300 locals have already passed resolutions pledging to continue the fight, based on resolutions passed by the CWA Executive Board and the AFL-CIO Executive Council.

CWA members are calling their senators at (202) 224-3121 and representatives at (202) 225-3121 and urging them to support the Employee Free Choice Act. The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) and 125 members of Congress, promotes card-check organizing, first contract arbitration and stiffer penalities for union busting.

Cohen's office is training staff and local leaders in workshops and presentations. The sessions make a strong case that collective bargaining is a public good that stimulates the economy and raises wages for all working people. It also hammers home the failure of our labor laws and that they are broken.

Also, CWA is ready to ship to locals, cost-free for distribution to members, brochures outlining the crisis and what we can do to restore collective bargaining and organizing rights in America.
