Locals Urged to Push for Bargaining Rights

CWA leaders are calling on all locals to help crank up our drive for workers' bargaining and organizing rights the week of June 28-July 4 as workers around the country celebrate Independence Day by telling both presidential candidates what freedom means to us.

A key to the campaign is collecting from CWA members and their families thousands of signed postcards which will be presented to Senator John Kerry and President George W. Bush. The postcards – now available from CWA headquarters – thank Kerry for supporting the Employees Free Choice Act (S. 1925 and H.R. 3319), and they urge Bush to reverse his opposition to the bill to restore basic workers' rights.

Locals should place their orders for bulk quantities of the postcards as well as campaign lapel stickers by contacting Hetty Scofield either by e-mail to Hscofield@cwa-union.org or by phone at 202-434-1499.

Locals are urged to distribute and collect the cards at meetings and through workplace mobilization and to return them to Hetty at CWA HQ, 501 Third St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001. (Even though the postcards are addressed and postage-paid, please collect them and send them back to us in bulk – we want to personally, and publicly, deliver them to Kerry and to the White House.)

"We have seen over and over how corporations like Verizon Wireless, Comcast and many others game the system and break the law to crush organizing campaigns and refuse to bargain first contracts," said CWA President Morton Bahr. "It's imperative that we elevate this critical issue and inject it into the 2004 political campaigns right up to the race for the presidency. Our election goal is a Congress that will pass this bill next year and a president who will sign it."

Currently 201 House members and 30 senators have signed on to co-sponsor our bill, which calls for card check organizing rights, first contract arbitration and stiff penalties for labor law violations. Check CWA's website for a regularly updated list of co-sponsors and a link to contact your senators and representatives to urge them to sign on.
