Locals Turn Up the Heat on Verizon Wireless

CWA locals took advantage of the holiday season, the biggest retail season for wireless phones and service, to spread a message of union solidarity and support for Verizon Wireless workers who have been blocked by the company's hostility to union representation in their bid for a union voice. Hundreds of CWA activists took part in actions in Districts 1, 2, 4, 6 and 13 over a four-week period.

In addition to previously reported holiday actions in Boston, Burlington, Vt., and throughout New York, CWA members in Princeton, N.J., paid a visit to the home of Verizon Wireless CEO Strigl, interrupting an evening dinner party with the sound of their protest. Joining in were members of Locals 1022, 1023, 1034 and 1040.

Members of CWA Locals 1101 and 1105 joined members of Musicians Local 802 in New York City, who smashed cell phones on the sidewalk to call attention to Verizon Wireless workers' plight, while leaders and activists from Local 1103 pledged to continue their store actions and focus public attention on Verizon Wireless' union-busting.

In all, 10 locals from District 2 got involved in the campaign, and in District 13, local 13000 members leafleted at 14 stores, while members of 13500 covered 23 stores plus one service reseller, handing out nearly 1,800 leaflets in the district.

CWA locals in District 4 representing Verizon, SBC, Cingular and AT&T workers also held actions. Members of Local 4202, Chicago; 4671, Sun Prairie, Wis.; 4773, northern Indiana; 4050, Southfield, Mich., and 4371, Marion, Ohio, leafleted and sent a message of solidarity to Verizon Wireless workers.
