Lieberman: ‘Thank You CWA’

Just before Sen. Joe Lieberman took the stage Tuesday morning at the Legislative-Political Conference, someone showed him a newspaper picture from his speech at CWA’s annual convention last August. He was wearing the same clothes.

Cheerfully chagrined, the former vice presidential candidate told the crowd, “I want you to know I’ve got more than one suit.”

He was full of good humor, even as he took on the subject of last November’s election and the ensuing battle in Florida. He joked about a Lieberman-Pat Buchanan ticket, referring to ballot errors that gave the infamous conservative thousands of votes in Palm Beach County.

“That’s a ticket only a mother could love,” Lieberman said.

He’d asked to come to the legislative conference to thank CWA members for their support, and he clearly still had it. The crowd gave him three standing ovations.

“I wish I could begin every day on Capitol Hill this way,” he said with a big smile.

When he spoke at CWA’s convention in Anaheim, it was his first public appearance after Vice President Al Gore made him his running mate. He recalled how “charged up” he was afterwards and said he’d never forget that day, or the rest of CWA’s efforts in Election 2000.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you,” he said. “The work that was done in every local, person to person with your members, made it possible for Al Gore and me to win the election — yes, my friends, we won the popular vote. The working people of America, led by labor, understood what was on the line.”

Lieberman didn’t talk about rumors that he’ll run for president in 2004. But he alluded to the future, saying “life comes in chapters.”

“If you believe in a cause, a setback, even one as strange and bitter as what happened last year, it only makes you come back more committed than ever to fight for the principles and programs you believe in.”
