Let Us Translate

In accepting the GOP nomination for president, Mitt Romney vowed to restore America’s economic prosperity. But Romney isn’t the kind of guy you take at his word. Allow us to translate:

What he said: “Today women are more likely than men to start a business. They need a president who respect and understand what they do. And let me make this clear.  Unlike President Obama, I will not raise taxes on the middle class of America.”

Translation: My plan would actually require a middle class tax increase. To keep my promise to maintain the current level of revenue, it would raise taxes on middle class families by up to $2,000.

What he said: “…unlike the president, I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs.”

Translation: I want to create a territorial tax system, which would allow the profits made by an American company in foreign country to escape U.S. taxation – incentivizing corporations to shift work to low-tax countries abroad and create 800,000 jobs overseas. And my 59-point plan to create jobs and lower unemployment simply has no real world evidence. It would actually kill 360,000 jobs in 2013 alone.

What he said: “We will cut the deficit and put America on track to a balanced budget.”

Translation: My plan lacks specifics. I have no idea how I’ll cut the national debt when I’ve already promised to cut taxes, increase military spending, restore more than $700 billion to Medicare and repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law – a plan that will actually help the country save money.
