Labor Fights "Right to Work" in Oklahoma

CWA President Morton Bahr and District 6 Vice President Andy Milburn have asked members to do their part to block the so-called “Right-to-Work Initiative” (Measure 695) on the Oklahoma ballot Sept. 25.

"This proposed constitutional amendment threatens the ability of CWA and other unions to bargain effectively for working families. We urge you to help educate your friends and neighbors who may not understand that ‘right-to-work’ is a purposely misleading term used by anti-labor forces who want to weaken and even destroy the union movement," they wrote in a letter to members.

They urged members to be sure to register to vote, noting that the registration deadline is Aug. 31.

"Right-to-work" laws exist in 21 states. "Not surprisingly, these are the 21 states with not only the lowest percentage of union membership, but also the lowest wages, highest poverty levels, fewest people covered by health insurance and the lowest education spending per student," Bahr and Milburn said.
