Labor Day a Click Away

The AFL-CIO’s new-fangled, old-fashioned Labor Day celebration is back. For the second year, the federation is bringing rousing speeches, games, music, polls and all sorts of other Labor Day activities to the Internet.

The celebration will highlight some of the major campaigns labor is involved in now, including CWA’s fight to get Verizon to keep its word to workers. The company has refused to honor card-check language negotiated in the last contract.

Some of the site’s other features include:
  • A gallery featuring a “Jacob Lawrence Remembered” exhibit with several of his works and much more.
  • A performance stage, with a Dropkick Murphys concert and interview, worker-inspired music by Ani DiFranco and others, and union karaoke.
  • A Rights@Work Action Center, where visitors can take an online poll, hear worker stories, and view a new report on workers’ rights.
  • Funland, with such games as “Shatter the Glass Ceiling,” crossword puzzles, and a kids’ section.
  • A card shop for Labor Day e-cards, birthday e-cards, and more, plus screensavers.
  • An interfaith gathering including Labor in the Pulpit & faith teachings on worker justice.
The Labor Day web party started Aug. 28 and runs through Sept. 21 at www.aflcio.org/laborday.
