IUE-CWA President Fire to Retire

IUE-CWA President Ed Fire has announced that he will retire, effective Dec. 28. The announcement came at a Sept. 25 meeting of the division's executive council.

The council named as Fire's successor IUE-CWA District 7 President Mike Bindas. The council's action will be forwarded to CWA's Executive Board which will act at its November meeting to fill the Board vacancy created by Fire's retirement.

"Mike is a good man," said Fire, who has known Bindas for more than 45 years. Both hail from Warren, Ohio Local 717. "He has extensive knowledge and experience. He is dedicated to the union. I am convinced that he will do a fine job as division president."

Fire, almost fully recovered from heart surgery this July, said he had been considering retirement for some time.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed serving in every position I've been privileged to hold: district committeeman in GM on the plant floor, local union president, president and secretary-treasurer of District 7, IUE General Motors Conference Board chairman, secretary-treasurer of IUE and, since 1997, president. I have had a challenging, interesting and rewarding union career," said Fire. "I will, of course, miss my good friends and colleagues. But, it's time to move on."
