In The News: ‘New Media’ Leaves Women, Minorities Behind

Women and minority workers are losing a critical path for advancement as a result of media consolidation and the changing telecommunications industry, according to new reports by the Institute for Women's Policy Research and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund.

"Making the Right Call: Jobs and Diversity in the Communications and Media Sector," the IWPR report, found that the reduced degree of unionization in the communications sector has dragged down the earnings and advancement of women and minority workers. The report is available at www.iwpr.org.

The LCCREF analysis, "Employment Trends in the Communications and Media Industries," looks at the harmful effect of consolidated media ownership — especially in radio — on opportunities for women and minorities. That report is available at: www.civilrights.org/issues/communication/ employment_trends.pdf.
