In The News: Guild Seeks Alternative to Murdoch at Dow Jones

Trying to head off a $5 billion Dow Jones takeover bid by Rupert Murdoch — tabloid king and owner of Fox News — workers represented by CWA's media sector are reaching out to other investors.

The Yucaipa Companies, headed by Ron Burkle, has expressed interest in working with the Independent Association of Publishing Employees, part of the Newspaper Guild-CWA, and with the Bancroft family, which owns Dow Jones. The company publishes the Wall Street Journal.

"Our union remains hopeful that the Bancroft family will conclude that a sale is not necessary," IAPE-CWA President Steve Yount said. "But if a sale must take place, we believe there are alternatives to Rupert Murdoch."
