House Members Support United Flight Attendants

More than 100 members of the House of Representatives signed a letter sent to United Airlines CEO Glenn Tilton Feb. 16 admonishing the airline for its attempt to double-cross 2,500 retired flight attendants by cutting their health benefits.

United had promised full health coverage for attendants who retired before July 1, 2003, but now it wants to take advantage of bankruptcy laws to break it's commitment.

"Frankly, we are surprised that United Airlines, so close to successfully emerging from bankruptcy, would risk the lowering of employee morale and reduction of workers' confidence in the company," they wrote. Noting that flight attendants have already agreed to major concessions to help United recover, the lawmakers urged Tilton to drop the attack on health care.
