Hostile Climate Challenges Legislative Activists
CWA activists will gather for the union’s Legislative-Political Conference, April 22-25 in Washington, D.C., at a time when the legislative climate is growing more hostile to working families.
Possible threats to workers’ rights in the form of attacks on the Fair Labor Standards Act and on funding for OSHA and other worker protection programs will be a top concern for hundreds of rank-and-file activists who have registered for the conference.
Speakers confirmed so far include Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri, Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn), Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, and Terry McAuliffe, chair of the Democratic National Committee. Other distinguished congressional and political figures also have been invited.
Along with protecting workers’ rights, other issues on the conference agenda include the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas, patients’ bill of rights legislation, prescription drug coverage for Medicare recipients and voting rights.
