Honor July 4, Demand Freedom to Organize & Bargain

This Independence Day, working Americans will tell the presidential candidates what freedom means to us.

The week of June 28-July 4, CWA members will join with thousands who belong to AFL-CIO affiliates in distributing to their co-workers, then collecting, postcards to be presented to Senator John Kerry and to President Bush.

The postcards will thank Kerry for his support of the Employee Free Choice Act (S. 1925 and H.R. 3319), which would ensure that when a majority of employees in a workplace decides to form a union, they can do so without the unfair obstacles employers now use to block workers' free choice.

Postcards to the president will note that he has not agreed to support the legislation and will urge him to change his mind "so America can offer all the freedoms guaranteed to us in a free and democratic society."

Also that week, members will wear solidarity stickers to work proclaiming, "I'll Fight for the Freedom to Have Unions!"

Citing the leadership of more than 40 locals in Dec. 10, 2003 events to help others gain a voice at work, and the resolutions passed by more than 350 locals to continue the fight, CWA Executive Vice President Larry Cohen and Secretary-Treasurer Barbara Easterling urged them all to participate in the workplace week of action and to recruit others.

"In CWA, we can utilize our local workplace mobilization structures to distribute the postcards one-on-one and educate our members about the crisis in collective bargaining and organizing rights," Cohen said. "I hope we can count on you to participate."

Locals should send their order for postcards and stickers, specifying the quantity, to yherrera@cwa-union.org.

Signed postcards should be returned to Yvette Herrera, CWA Executive Vice President's Office, 501 Third Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20001.
