Guild Members Awarded Pulitzers in Eight Categories
The Pulitzer Prize, journalism’s most coveted honor, has been awarded this year to seven reporters and photographers who belong to The Newspaper Guild, as well as three newsrooms with TNG-CWA contracts.
“We’re proud to represent members who represent the best of their profession,” TNG-CWA President Linda Foley said.
Four members of TNG-CWA Local 35 at the Washington Post received Pulitzers:
At the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Minnesota, George Dohrmann of TNG-CWA Local 2 won for beat reporting. “His determined reporting, despite negative reader reaction, revealed academic fraud in the men’s basketball program at the University of Minnesota,” the committee said.
Associated Press reporters Charles J. Hanley and Martha Mendoza, members of TNG-CWA Local 222, were honored for investigative reporting. Their work was praised for “revealing, with extensive documentation, the decades-old secret of how American soldiers early in the Korean War killed hundreds of Korean civilians in a massacre at the No Gun Ri Bridge.”
The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News staffs, represented by TNG-CWA Local 74, each won a Pulitzer for breaking news coverage of the Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Col. The Post, cited for “clear and balanced coverage” of the tragedy, won for reporting. The Rocky was honored for photography for “its powerful collection of emotional images.”
The Wall Street Journal staff, represented by TNG-CWA Local 1096, was honored for national reporting for “its revealing stories that question U.S. defense spending and military deployment in the post-Cold War era and offer alternatives for the future.”
