Guild Journalists Among Pulitzer Prize Winners

Members of The Newspaper Guild-CWA from seven newspapers and the Associated Press were among this year's winners and finalists for Pulitzer Prizes, which were announced last week.

Guild-represented winners included Gareth Cook of The Boston Globe for explanatory reporting, Connie Schultz of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland for commentary and Deanne Fitzmaurice of the San Francisco Chronicle for feature photography.

The Pulitzer judges praised Cook for reporting "with clarity and humanity" on the "complex scientific and ethical dimensions of stem cell research;" Schultz for her "pungent" columns on behalf of the underprivileged; and Fitzmaurice for her photo essay on an Oakland hospital's efforts to heal an Iraqi boy nearly killed by an explosion.

In addition, the Guild-represented staff of the Associated Press won the Pulitzer for breaking news photography, for what judges said was its "stunning series of photographs of bloody year-long combat inside Iraqi cities."

Guild members who were finalists included William J. Broad and David E. Sanger, both of The New York Times, for explanatory reporting; Diana B. Henriques of The New York Times, investigative reporting; Anne Hull of The Washington Post, feature writing; Daniel Vasquez of the San Jose Mercury News, editorial writing; and James Gehrz of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, feature photography.

Also, the Guild-represented staff of The Washington Post was a finalist for the national reporting prize for its chronicling of abuse by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
