Four Workers Named as Morton Bahr Scholars
Empire State College, State University of New York, has announced that four members have been selected as 2002-2003 Morton Bahr scholars.
The Morton Bahr Scholarship Program is named in honor of CWA's president, a 1983 graduate of Empire State College and prominent advocate of distance learning and adult education.
Olivia Buckmon of Stone Mountain, Ga., Local 3204, an account representative with BellSouth; Edward Duffy of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Local 1103, a retired central office technician for Verizon; Linda Goddard of Brooklyn, N.Y., Local 1180, a principal administrative assistant at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center; and Diane Mendoza-Petry of West Chester, Ohio, Local 4404, a ticket agent for US Airways will receive full funding up to $130 per course toward either a two-year or four-year degree program, covering tuition, fees and an allowance for books.
The first 10 Bahr scholars enrolled through Empire State's Center for Distance Learning in the fall of 2001. Most are continuing for their second year. The scholarship is renewable each year as long as recipients make satisfactory progress in their studies.
Bahr scholars are required to complete at least one or two courses per semester. During their first term, they must also apply for other federal, state, corporate or union financial aid.
Priority for selection is given to CWA members and their families and domestic partners, although the program is open to other workers as well. Criteria used by the selection committee include capability, program match with career goals, financial need, leadership qualities and ethnic and gender diversity. The deadline for new applications is July 26, 2003.
The Empire State program is geared toward giving adult workers with full-time jobs an opportunity to pursue college studies part time from home. Many students receive a boost toward their degrees through credit for previous education and life experience.
