Fenn Workers Locked Out

IUE-CWA members locked out by Fenn Manufacturing in Newington, Conn., are getting strong support from the state’s congressional delegation, Republicans and Democrats.
In a letter to Fenn’s parent company, SPX Corp., the senators, representatives and other Connecticut leaders called on Fenn to resume contract negotiations.

U.S. Sens. Christopher Dodd and Joseph Lieberman; U.S. Reps Nancy Johnson, Christopher Shays, Rosa DeLauro, James Maloney, John Larson and Rob Simmons; State Sen. Biagio Ciotto; State Rep Sandy Nafis and Newington Mayor Thomas B. McBride all joined the call urging Fenn to settle the more than four-month-long dispute.

Members of IUE-CWA Local 81266, who produce aerospace parts for defense helicopters, went on strike at Fenn on July 9 over the company’s bad-faith bargaining and contract demands intended to bust the union. They include bypassing seniority, ending premium pay and subcontracting work.

In October, the strike became a lockout when the union proposed a return to work while bargaining continued. The company rejected the offer.
