Editor's Note: The following two letters are from students who received Morton Bahr scholarships for the distance learning program at Empire State College in New York. To learn more about the scholarships, named for CWA's president, go to Empire State's website, www.esc.edu, and type "Morton Bahr Scholarship" in the search box or call (800) 867-5941. June 1 is the deadline to apply for 2005-2006 scholarships.
I would like to thank the Morton Bahr Scholarship program for providing me with an amazing opportunity. When I first moved to the rural town I now call home, guidance counselors told me I wasn't college material. I was married at age 19, worked various jobs and later became a stay-at-home mom until my youngest child started school. I have always volunteered advocating for children, and I continued to do so after returning to work.
With government assistance in 2002, I started attending Empire State College, where I was able to get credit for what I'd done over the past 25 years. But when my oldest son moved, the government reduced the amount of money I get to attend college. When I learned I'd won the Bahr scholarship I was ecstatic.
I work with special needs children, assist the school's athletic director and am the president of our local Dollars for Scholars chapter. I know firsthand how much a scholarship means and I truly appreciate being one of the recipients. I just finished my associate's degree in early childhood development and now the Bahr scholarship is allowing me to start work on my bachelor's degree.
Diane Archibee, Sandy Creek, N.Y.
I want to extend my deepest appreciation and gratitude for being honored as a Morton Bahr scholar for 2004-2005.
As a member of CWA Local 3108 in Orlando, Fla., I understand and share the vision CWA has for today's union member. I believe that no amount of education is enough to survive in today's ever-changing technological world.
It is with this belief and the desire to bring change to a stagnant workforce by example that I decided to continue my formal education. Mr. Bahr's steadfast belief that today's union members not only have the need but also the responsibility to continue their education has inspired me to strive to become a more knowledgeable, better-informed employee. With the help of this scholarship, it will now be easier to pursue the college degree I have hoped to attain for many years.
