Dear Editor:

Janelle Hartman had an interesting article about media and democracy in the 2002, November/December issue of the CWA News. After reading it I am more optimistic about unions themselves playing a critical role in providing news.

Most CWA locals could have quarterly newsletters featuring worker's views and voices. Unions could allow free speech and dialogue where corporate entities have denied it and engage the community besides.

Earlier this month I went to a Wal-Mart with about 100 other union folks to support nonunion employees who are facing that retail giant. There was some training prior to the event. Two pages of talking points were passed out to participants in this UFCW/Jobs with Justice venture. I never learned so much about Wal-Mart. It was fascinating to see all the imported Wal-Mart managers hurrying around in a panic, scandalized because community leaders and unionists had infiltrated one of their stores.

I see a lot of potential news, publicity and photography that might be connected with filling news gaps left by corporate media. Workers have better news on the conduct of their immediate employers. Employees have firsthand knowledge about schemes and scams. Putting funds into our locals, where writers and editors are needed, is a must if unions are going to organize and grow in this climate.
