EVP's Office to Focus on 'Worksite Campaigns'

President Morton Bahr announced at a CWA executive board meeting in mid-October that the office of the executive vice president will become a "center for worksite campaigns."

arry Cohen was elected to the EVP position by delegates at CWA's 60th annual convention in Chicago on Aug. 31, to succeed M.E. Nichols, who has retired. Cohen had been an assistant to Bahr with responsibility for the union's organizing efforts prior to his election as executive vice president.

Under Cohen, the EVP's office will have responsibility for organizing, education and mobilization, as well as such existing EVP functions as civil rights, health and safety, employment and training centers and union benefit programs, Bahr said.

In addition, CWA's international affairs office will be integrated into the EVP's office, as part of an effort to "perfect an expanded international strategy in order to meet the new challenges of a global economy," Bahr said. He noted that most of the major employers with which CWA holds contracts have now expanded operations into other countries, either through startups, acquisitions or joint ventures such as the one between AT&T and British Telecom.

Bahr and Cohen announced that Yvette Herrera, who has been an administrative assistant to the president with responsibility for education and training, will become assistant to the executive vice president. She will continue to focus on education and mobilization activities, Bahr said.

John Kulstad, who has served as assistant to the executive vice president under both Nichols and the late John Carroll, will become special assistant to the EVP and will continue to direct most of the work previously assigned to the EVP, Bahr said.

In a letter to all local presidents and CWA staff announcing the restructure, Bahr said, "The Executive Board joins Larry and his team in working together with you, as we continue our sole mission of improving the lives of CWA families and workers everywhere by building an even stronger CWA."
