Employment Center Provides CWA Jobs
A CWA employment center will supply about 60 technicians to U S West in selected areas. CWA is also working to fill an undetermined number of positions for an alternate service provider in 32 U.S. cities.
“Rather than turn to non-union contractors,” said CWA Executive Vice President M.E. Nichols, “these companies have come to us. Although some may not be permanent, these will be good-paying union jobs with union benefits. They will broaden our representation and strengthen CWA.”
U S West and CWA reached agreement in January to launch what the company touted as “the industry’s first employment and training center.” U S West will hire residential installation and maintenance technicians through the center for the Denver, Colorado Springs and other areas. The positions will initially run through early July but may be extended by the company. U S West may hire trial technicians as regular employees. Techs, during a six-month trial of the center, will earn $18.05 per hour, with additional benefits provided through CWA.
Candidates should have experience in residential installation and maintenance, and will be required to pass screening tests prior to employment. Those who apply will share some of the expense for skill validation and testing procedures, not to exceed $100. Workers will be required to have basic hand tools. The center plans to offer additional training in a later phase of its operation.
Also, the TeleCore company is looking for qualified 5ESS CO technicians, DMS CO techs and SL-100 switch techs. Jobs are located in cities across the United States.
Says Paul Anderson, CWA director of apprenticeships, benefits and employment, the pay rate for these full-time positions will be about 5 percent above the going contract rate for their localities, with additional benefits provided through CWA trusts.
Employment center workers hired by U S West will be represented by the CWA locals where they are assigned. TeleCore hires nationwide will be represented by CWA Local 9400; the company is based in the Los Angeles area.
