Employees at Pacific Bell Wireless Say 'CWA Yes'

Employees of Pacific Bell Wireless have chosen the Communications Workers of America to represent them, and under "card check" provisions negotiated last year, the company has agreed to recognize CWA as the bargaining representative for wireless employees throughout the California and Nevada territory.

Pacific Bell Wireless, a subsidiary of SBC Communications, serves more than half a million customers in California and Nevada.

Technicians, administrative and clerical employees, as many as 600, will have the benefit of CWA representation in determining wages, hours and working conditions. That number will likely increase, the union reported.

CWA Vice President Tony Bixler said that a majority of wireless employees demonstrated their support for CWA by signing representation cards; Pacific Bell Wireless then recognized the unit as called for under the current contract's neutrality and card check recognition clause.

In this year's bargaining, CWA has negotiated similar expedited representation procedures with all the major telecommunications companies, achieving one of the union's top bargaining goals- access for CWA members to the jobs of the future and expanded employment security for workers.

CWA represents some 630,000 workers, including more than 70,000 in California, Nevada and Hawaii.
