Emmys Honor NABET-CWA Members' Behind-the-Scenes Magic

You're probably not thinking about CWA when you sit down to watch TV, but next time you catch ABC's The View, All My Children or One Life to Live or the syndicated Ellen Degeneres Show, enjoy a moment of union pride.

Camera operators, video operators, boom operators and other behind-the-scenes technical professionals—members of the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians-CWA—were honored recently with 2005 Daytime Emmy awards.

The winners were among scores of NABET-CWA nominees for Emmys. And they are among hundreds of technical workers the union represents on a variety of daytime talk shows and soaps in New York and Los Angeles.

"Once again, an impressive number of our members have been recognized by their industry peers for the professionalism and skills they display every day on the job," NABET-CWA President John Clark said. "Our members are the best in the business at what they do, and it's gratifying to see their accomplishments rewarded."

The View and daytime drama winners, all based in New York, are members of NABET-CWA Local 51016. Winners from the Los Angeles-based Ellen Degeneres Show are members of Local 59053 in Burbank, Calif.

From The View, recognized for outstanding achievement in technical direction/electronic camera/video control, the winners were Rene Butler, Frank Cocchia, Reginald Drakeford, Ross Fortier, Trevor Thompson, Rich Freedman, Eric Kendra, Denis Linehan, Richard Cavaliere and Nicholas Besink.

Honored in the same category for a drama series were One Life to Live's Robert Santeramo, Doug Schmidt, Barrin Bonnet, Howard Zeidman, Frank Forsyth, Thomas Tucker, Lawrence Strack, Joseph Puleo, Rich Westlein and John Shankoski.

For outstanding achievement in camera editing for a drama, the winners were All My Children's Roger Haenelt, Stephen Cali and Robert Frazier. Their All My Children colleagues Charles Eisen, Dominick Maldari, Ashley Victor Howe, Robert Gigliuto, Robert Ambrico, Locke Wallace, George Montenez, Eric Johnson and Edward Raab were honored for outstanding achievement in live and direct-to-tape sound mixing for a drama series.

In the same sound-mixing category for a talk show, Terry Fountain and Billy Sherry won for their work on the Ellen Degeneres Show.
