E-Hearing Takes Testimony on United Pension Scheme

More than 1,000 flight attendants have logged onto the first-ever online hearing sponsored by House Democratic Representatives George Miller (CA) and Jan Schakowsky (IL).

AFA-CWA members and other United workers are posting statements about the devastating impact of United Airlines' decision to dump $6.6 billion in pension plan obligations on taxpayers by transferring the bulk of that debt to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.

Miller and Schakowsky are among the 83 co-sponsors of H.R. 2327, which calls for a six-month moratorium on similar attempts by companies to shift their pension obligations to the PBGC. A similar measure has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii), and Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.).

The "e-hearing" is intended to put a human face on the decision that will mean big cuts in retirement security for current and future retirees at United, AFA-CWA said.

The online hearing site received hundreds of statements and testimony from flight attendants on its opening day and accepted comments until June 3.
