District 1 Boosts Providence Newspaper Workers

CWA members from District 1 held their district meeting in Providence, R.I., and gave a big boost to some 420 members of CWA Local 31041 who are fighting for a fair contract at the Providence Journal.

Rallying outside the newspaper offices on Nov. 6, more than 300 Jobs with Justice activists, supporters from other unions and CWAers called on the newspaper management to stop its illegal treatment of workers, stop breaking the law and negotiate a fair contract. The CWA local represents janitors, reporters, advertising sales representatives, clerks, photographers and editors at the paper.

Following the rally, the action moved inside, where activists picketed around cubicles.

The Guild local has been fighting the Journal's anti-union tactics and working to bargain a fair contract for nearly four years. Newspaper management has been found guilty of 27 federal labor law violations by a National Labor Relations Board judge, and recently lost a round in U.S. District Court, as a federal judge ruled for the local on the continued collection of dues.

Journal management and its anti-worker policies will be the focus of a Workers' Rights hearing in Providence on Dec.10. That also is the date of the nationwide campaign by the labor movement to restore workers' bargaining and organizing rights.
