Dex Media Contract Boosts Wages, Job Security

CWA has reached a tentative agreement covering 1,500 directory workers at Dex Media Inc., formerly Qwest's yellow pages unit, that improves wages and job security while maintaining fully paid health care premiums.

Under the proposed three-year agreement, non-commission workers will see annual wage increases of 3 percent, plus annual team awards ranging from 1 percent to 3 percent of earnings. Sales workers are getting a redesigned and improved compensation plan, with increases in the incremental salary structure.

Locals mobilized throughout Qwest territory, making all the difference at the table, said Lew Ellingson, CWA representative and chair of the bargaining committee.

CWA negotiators achieved members' key goals including maintaining fully paid health care premiums and a lump-sum pension option, Ellingson said.

Job security language includes new provisions to restrict contracting out if any workers are scheduled to lose their jobs, as well as significant improvements in severance payouts.

Other improvements include more flexibility in scheduling personal leave days, the addition of a third day off for serious illness and funeral leave, and a $20,000 death benefit that covers all employees.

CWA represents sales, operations, customer service, graphic artists and other workers at Dex Media. The company was formed by the sale of Qwest Communications' directory services to two investment firms. It publishes 272 white and yellow pages directories in 14 states.
