Democrats Spotlight Comcast Union-Busting

Union members put a nationwide spotlight on Comcast Corp. this week, with informational picketing at Comcast-sponsored events at the Democratic National Convention, a prime time appearance on the convention stage and leafleting in more than 150 cities to encourage workers who want a union voice.

CWA members, along with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, took their message about Comcast's bad faith practices and anti-worker policies to convention delegates and members of Congress.

A crew from IBEW Local 2222, joined by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, leafleted outside a Comcast-sponsored reception for the Massachusetts congressional delegation. Union members distributed leaflets to members of Congress who asked how they could help. CWA and IBEW members also leafleted Comcast vendor locations inside the convention hall.

A comcast technician fired for trying to organize his coworkers through CWA appeared on stage at the Convention Thursday night with AFL-CIO President John Sweeney and two other struggling workers.

Stephen White, who was fired from the union-busting cable company in March, told reporters he was excited to bring his mission for workers' rights to delegates and to the country via C-SPAN. "I take every chance I get to bring attention to what happens when people like me try to organize," he said.

White appeared with Jerry Nowadsky, an Iowa machinist whose job in a printing plant was shipped to China, and Maricella Garcia, whose service in the Marine Corps helped pay her way through college. Today, Nowadsky works in a grocery store for no benefits and half the wages he earned before his job was outsourced. Despite her college degree, Garcia can't find a permanent full-time job.

"Sadly, Jerry, Maricella and Stephen are not isolated examples," Sweeney told the delegates in Boston. "They represent million of Americans whose dreams have been put on hold for the past 4 years. It's time we elected a president who will bring back those dreams."

CWA and IBEW are working together in a joint organizing campaign at Comcast endorsed by the AFL-CIO and its Strategic Campaign program.

On July 28, in more than 150 locations, CWA and IBEW members leafleted and followed up at locations where Comcast workers have expressed an interest in organizing, providing the workers with information about recent contract settlements at Comcast.
