Delphi Targeted by Dec. 10 Action in Dayton

IUE-CWA is taking the lead on one of the biggest Dec. 10 actions in the nation as Delphi Corp. continues to demand drastic wage cuts from its workers and threatens to disenfranchise them of their collective bargaining rights through the bankruptcy process.

CWA President Larry Cohen, IUE-CWA President Jim Clark, United Steelworkers President Leo Gerard and other union leaders will address thousands of Delphi workers in front of the Dayton, Ohio, courthouse to let the public know the depth of their anger at management's proposal to close several plants and cut their wages by more than 60 percent, to around $12.50 an hour.

They are seeking to build community support for fair bargaining between the company and its unions and balancing the cost-savings needed to keep Delphi afloat with saving jobs and giving workers wages and benefits sufficient to support their families.

IUE-CWA leaders on Nov. 29 welcomed news that Delphi Corp. is postponing its deadline for asking the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to nullify its contracts with any union that has not modified its agreement with the company.

But, said IUE-CWA Automotive Conference Board Chairman Henry Reichard, "We remain extremely concerned about Delphi's continued demand for significant pay cuts and massive lay-offs and the impact that will have on our members and their communities."

Delphi extended its deadline for bargaining new agreements from Dec. 16 to at least Jan. 20 in response to an announcement by General Motors that it will come to the table to see what it can do to help resolve the situation at Delphi.

"That's a positive development for us," said Reichard. "We're pleased that GM is now participating in the process."

IUE-CWA also filed an opinion with the bankruptcy court objecting to Delphi's motion to implement a Key Employee Compensation Program (KECP) that would reward company executives with nearly $600 million in bonuses and stock options.

IUE-CWA continues to await further documentation from Delphi so it can engage in productive negotiations. For updates, visit the website at www.iue-cwa.org.
