Deadline Looms at Verizon Southwest

Negotiations for new contracts at Verizon Southwest and Verizon Supply, formerly GTE, are going strong, with CWA bargainers standing tough in the remaining days before the Aug. 15 expiration, CWA District 6 Vice President Andy Milburn said.

CWA’s bargaining goals include a fair increase in wages, improved pensions and retirement security, better health care and opportunity for workers to move into the new jobs created at the company and its subsidiaries. Job security and contracting are among other key issues.

CWA also is pressing to resolve problems at the service centers, where monitoring, intense pressure for sales, and scheduling have caused extreme levels of job stress.

Members have been mobilizing in support of the bargaining teams and to show unity and solidarity across Verizon operations. A “kick-off to bargaining” rally was held in June, with Milburn, Communications Vice President T.O. Moses and AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Linda Chavez Thompson speaking. Throughout Verizon Southwest, CWAers have been wearing red along with stickers that proclaim “Stronger together, one union, one contract.”

Chairing the CWA bargaining teams are Donna Bentley for Verizon Southwest, which covers more than 4,000 workers, and Mike Littleton for Verizon Supply, covering about 200 workers.
