CWA/NETT Academy Mailbag: CWA/NETT Academy Now Offers College Degrees

Members are showing lots of enthusiasm for Associate Degree programs in Telecommunications and Network Engineering recently announced by the CWA/NETT Academy and its partner, Stanly College.
David Young, an SBC maintenance administrator in Milwaukee and member of Local 4603, hasn't been to college, but he's already taking A+ through the CWA/NETT Academy. He's been in the job for four years but just recently learned he's eligible for union-negotiated training benefits.
He couldn't otherwise afford college, but now he's excited about the prospect of earning a degree. "It just puts me in the clouds, all the opportunities I would have when I complete my AA," Young said. "There's a lot of technology out there. The sky's the limit."
While Young is just starting on the path to a degree, Monique Allen of Local 9412 in Hayward, Calif., has a different situation. An SBC systems technician, she's already taken several courses for college credit through the CWA/NETT Academy, and she's got college credits from at least three other colleges to transfer. She's already earned about 50 credits that will transfer toward the 64 needed for her degree.
She likes distance learning - studying online. And, she says, "the instructors are always there, day or night, to answer my questions." She fulfills her hands-on requirements at Local 9423's lab in San Jose, Calif.
"I really appreciate the union setting this up," Allen said. "You have a business with clout, a great union and a college that's accredited - it's a great package."
