CWA/NETT Academy Mail Bag: Online 'Study Buddies' Go for Cisco Certification

College kids often find a location on campus to study together for difficult courses. But for adults who work full time, live far apart and study after work, that's difficult—maybe even impossible. Two Local 6012 members in Tulsa, Okla., studying to become Cisco Certified Network Associates have found they can be "study buddies" online.
Mark Simson is in his third 10-week semester of online study for his CCNA, through the CWA/NETT Academy. A customer service representative at the Cingular call center in Tulsa, he wants to win a promotion to the help desk or other IT work in the company. When he decided to enroll for CCNA, he asked around work and found that senior customer service rep Tony Finley, also a Local 6012 member, shared his interest. Both enrolled, and they value having the support of a friend online.
"We use Yahoo, mostly, to talk to each other," Simson said. Both log into the Stanly College website and review material together. "If we don't understand something, we can shoot each other a screen shot and talk about it back and forth," he said.
They find it particularly helpful when it comes time to review a tough chapter.
"We both take the sample test before we start our conversation, then compare answers to make sure we understand the material. When we later go onto the Cisco website to take the real test, it's a snap," Simson said.
He expects to finish his fourth and final semester of CCNA before Christmas. "Then I'll really have something to look forward to," he said.
