CWA Wins Strong Pact at Verizon North Central

Intense bargaining that continued for several hours past contract expiration has resulted in a tentative five-year agreement with Verizon North Central covering 2,000 workers in the Midwest, reported CWA District 4 Vice President Jeff Rechenbach.

The bargaining committee unanimously recommended ratification and contract explanation meetings were held to answer members' questions about the settlement. The ratification vote was to be completed by March 7.

The settlement provides wage increases of 10.5 percent over the contract term, plus a 4 percent lump sum payment on ratification.

Other improvements include an additional personal holiday, a 5 percent increase in the minimum pension, increases in the retiree medical premium caps, and improvements in health care and dental coverage for active workers.

The agreement established a new job title for workers performing FTTP, or fiber to the premise work. Other job classifications were upgraded and workers will receive parity wage increases and wage progression increases by Feb. 1, 2009 for equivalent job classifications within the contract.

It is the second contract negotiated this year between CWA and Verizon. Earlier this year, members at Verizon California also ratified a five-year agreement.
