CWA Warns Comcast Customers on Privacy

In a daylong action, members of CWA and the IBEW along with support from other unions leafleted in more than 50 communities in 18 states, alerting local governments and customers of Comcast Communications about privacy concerns over Comcast's handling of customers' personal financial information.

Comcast now can share a customer's social security number, driver's license number, telephone number and other personal, identifying information with any company it chooses, the CWA leaflet reminded customers. This is a serious breach of consumer privacy, especially for customers concerned about the growing epidemic of identity theft and fraud, CWA said in a news statement.

Demonstrating at city halls and other government offices, union members called on elected officials to make sure that Comcast is abiding by community standards. Local governments, which grant the franchise agreements for cable service, can hold public hearings to spotlight the serious shortcomings in Comcast's current policy, CWA pointed out.
