CWA Presses Lucent Technologies On Manufacturing Changes
CWA is in discussions with Lucent Technologies over the announced restructuring of its manufacturing operations.
Last month, Lucent said it was looking to “contract manufacturing” to take over some portion of its production operations, though the company indicated it wanted to retain “high end” process manufacturing. Lucent plans to roll out the changes over the next 18 to 24 months.
CWA is meeting with the company over the specific work and locations that might be affected, said Jim Irvine, CWA’s vice president for communications and technologies.
Irvine stressed that CWA’s goal is to safeguard the jobs, benefits and union representation rights of Lucent workers. Also under discussion is the feasibility of an ESOP — employee stock ownership plan — for some of the production work.
