CWA Members Ratify Cingular Wireless 'Orange Contract'

CWA members at Cingular Wireless operations in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic region, Midwest and West have ratified a new four-year agreement by a 51 percent vote.

The mail vote was conducted by the American Arbitration Association.

The "Orange Contract" covers 5,300 workers in those regions; contracts covering an additional 16,000 Cingular Wireless members in the South and Southwest expire in 2006 and 2008, respectively.

Employment security was a key concern among members and the contract establishes new protections for members as the integration of AT&T Wireless goes forward. Improvements in job security include a new two-year recall process and a voluntary enhanced severance plan, based on years of service.

This settlement provides for a compounded wage increase of 11 percent for Cingular Wireless workers over the four-year contract term and establishes a new progression wage scale for retail sales consultants and inside representatives that will provide, on average, wage increases of 30.1 percent. Corporate care representatives will receive an average increase of 24.8 percent over the contract term.

The agreement addresses call center matters such as quota relief and job duties and establishes a joint committee to discuss stress relief, with a report due within six months.
