CWA Members Ratify BellSouth Agreement

Atlanta, Georgia -- Members of the Communications Workers of America working at BellSouth Corp., ratified a five-year agreement by a 74 percent vote. The agreement covers 46,000 CWA-represented workers at BellSouth operations in nine states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The agreement provides increases in base wages by more than 10.5 percent over the contract term plus an additional 4 percent lump sum this year. It also provides for pension increases of 12.5 percent and increases team incentive awards by 12 percent over the contract term.

The settlement preserves fully paid health care premiums for active workers and retirees, with some increases in health care co-payments and prescription drug costs.

Under the settlement, the "jobs of the future," work in Voice over the Internet Protocol (VoIP), Wireless Internet, and video sales and support, now will be performed by bargaining unit members. The agreement also provides for expanded job transfer rights for workers and extends overall eligibility, medical benefits and priority consideration for jobs to both full-time and part-time workers.

CWA and BellSouth will work together to bring DSL help desk work into the bargaining unit; CWA members already perform most of the DSL installation work.
