CWA Members Keep the Heat on Cingular

CWA members at Cingular Wireless are voting on the authorization of legal job actions and mobilization activities, and a possible strike if a fair contract cannot be reached with Cingular management.

The bargaining committee is urging members to use the strike authorization vote to send a clear message to management that they support the bargaining team and are determined to win a fair contract. The vote will be announced Feb. 25. The contract is being extended on a day-to-day basis.

Informal discussions with management are continuing, but CWA bargainers are extremely dissatisfied with management's response to workers' key concerns about employment security, compensation for retail sales workers, job titles, monitoring and other issues affecting call center workers, tech issues, a fair wage increase and more, said Teri Pluta, CWA District 4 staff representative and bargaining chair.

Bargaining got underway in Atlanta in mid-January covering about 5,300 workers under the "Orange" contract, for workers in CWA Districts 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, and 13. The contract covering Cingular workers in District 3 expires March 2006, and the agreement covering District 6 workers expires February 2008.
