CWA Helps Turn Another Red House Seat Blue

Democrat Ami Bera just pulled ahead in his tight race against GOP Rep. Dan Lungren to represent California’s 7th Congressional District.

The Associated Press called the race for Bera, whose lead widened to nearly 5,700 votes, as officials continued counting provisional and absentee ballots this week. A CWA-backed television spot was especially effective in spotlighting Lungren’s opposition to legislation to bring back good jobs to the United States.

Just days before, in another close House race, CWA-supported Democrat Kyrsten Sinema claimed victory over Tea Party candidate Vernon Parker in Arizona’s 9th Congressional District.

CWA, working with progressive partners and allies, played a big role in electing House members who support working families this election cycle.

CWA District 1 members in New York made a big push to reelect Rep. Tim Bishop in the 1st Congressional District and help Sean Maloney replace a Tea Party extremist in the 18th Congressional District.

In Massachusetts, members of IUE-CWA Local 81201 were a big part of the campaign to keep Democrat Rep. John Tierney’s 6th Congressional District seat. The Boston Globe reported that union support helped him "eke out" a win and that "as the election neared, Tierney's union edge widened to 5 to 1."

CWA volunteers and resources elected Texas representative Pete Gallego to represent the 23rd Congressional District, defeating a Republican incumbent.

In Maryland, CWAers helped elect John Delaney, turning out a Republican member of Congress who had held the 6th Congressional District seat for some 20 years.
