CWA Gains New Contract at SBC Yellow Pages

CWA members in District 4 who work for SBC Yellow Pages won a new five-year agreement that provides a 12 percent base increase for non-commission workers, plus $1,300 in bonuses, and improves the commission plan for sales workers, among other gains, reported District Vice President Seth Rosen.

The settlement was reached just after contract expiration, following a marathon 30-hour bargaining session and with the active mobilization of CWA members throughout District 4. The pact covers more than 1,200 workers; members now are receiving contract details and a ratification ballot.

Yellow Pages workers will continue to be covered by the SBC "core health benefits" for the life of the agreement, a key union goal. The settlement also provides for pension band increases of 7 percent over the contract term for clerical and non-commission workers and adds a new pension option for sales workers.

Bargaining Chair Linda Hinton said, "it was tough bargaining, but the committee stuck together and ended up with an agreement that each and every member enthusiastically supports." The bargaining team included Nancy Sims-Melton, Local 4100, Annie Murrel, Local 4309, Mike Plezia, Local 4340, Julia Simmons, Local 4900, and Hinton, CWA District 4 staff representative.

The SBC Yellow Pages is a very successful operation, rated as the country's top Yellow Pages service in a national Industry Usage study. According to the SBC Annual Report, the directory segment accounted for 30 percent of SBC's 2004 operating income, compared to 25 percent in 2003.
