CWA, Fellow Unions Take a Byte of the Web
Calling it a “working person’s AOL,” CWA and other AFL-CIO unions have unveiled a new Internet community designed for union families.
The website — cwa.workingfamilies.com — offers all the resources of other state-of-the-art online services, including e-mail, e-commerce, news, weather, sports and stock quotations. It also features a sweatshop-free marketplace, an online mall where shoppers can buy union-made and American-made products.
CWA President Morton Bahr demonstrated the CWA portal on the website at the AFL-CIO Executive Council meeting in New Orleans in mid-February. He said CWA is already using the Internet to assist in mobilizing, organizing and bargaining contracts.
“I think the most powerful statement about the effectiveness of the web is the Alliance@IBM,” Bahr said. “This group got its start on the Internet and really used the technology to self-organize and build its organization. We want to bring this new capability for collective action to all workers.”
CWA is among 20 major unions representing nine million members that have joined in the Internet project.
“Now we have the ability to mobilize, educate and organize our members electronically and the implications for legislative and political action are enormous,” AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said. “Soon we’ll be able to communicate instantaneously with our members with the click of a button. And we can recruit volunteers, register voters and raise money for our PACs.”
In addition to the union-friendly marketplace, a specialized “Work Shop” page is being developed to give unions a place to buy union-made and American-made tools, equipment, uniforms and work clothing at special discounts. “Neighborhood” pages are being developed with special content for retirees and children, and a “Work and Family Center” will offer practical advice for home and work.
Also, the AFL-CIO’s National Labor College will offer distance learning for college credit, as well as on-the-job certification.
The webpage can be accessed at no charge at cwa.workingfamilies.com. Full Internet and e-mail service is available for $14.95 a month.
