CWA Charges Comcast on Bad Faith Bargaining

CWA has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board over Comcast Corp.'s bad faith bargaining that resulted in 54 workers in the Pittsburgh area being forced to accept a layoff or face future job losses with no severance support.

Comcast claimed the workers voluntarily left the company. CWA charged that the workers were coerced because Comcast told them the existing severance package would expire on Oct. 5. Any worker laid off after that date would not receive severance benefits, which included a lump sum payment and medical coverage.

CWA has been bargaining with Comcast since Aug. 17, fighting to save jobs as the company pursues restructuring, said Marge Krueger, administrative assistant to District 13 vice president Vince Maisano. Comcast, instead of bargaining fairly, attempted to intimidate workers by telling them in early October that the existing severance package would expire on Oct. 5. This meant that workers laid off after that date would have no financial support during that period of joblessness, Krueger said.

CWA pointed out that the job cuts mainly affect longer-term, experienced workers who repair system outages and are a disservice to Pittsburgh area communities. The cuts affect workers in East Hills, South Hills, Westmoreland and the Corliss Street location. CWA represents about 500 Comcast employees in the Pittsburgh area.
