CWA Calls on Avaya Negotiators to Get Serious in Bargaining

Following is a statement by CWA Vice President Ralph Maly, communications and technologies, on the status of on-going contract talks with Avaya:

“In negotiations with Avaya, the goal of the Communications Workers of America has been to reach a fair settlement by contract expiration, May 27. Unfortunately, Avaya doesn’t seem to share this same determination.

CWA believes that we have been misled by the company’s bargaining stance, particularly on issues that are very important to workers at Avaya. This view is shared by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, bargaining jointly with us at Avaya.

With just two days remaining until contract expiration, it is critical that company negotiators make a renewed and serious effort to resolve all bargaining issues. Avaya’s actions make it appear that the company is choosing to head toward a strike or lockout, rather than resolving our differences. CWA remains committed to reaching a fair and equitable settlement at the bargaining table, and we strongly urge the company to join us in this approach.”

CWA members voted overwhelmingly, by a 96 percent vote, for strike authorization if a fair contract cannot be reached. IBEW members also supported strike authorization, by more than 90 percent.

CWA represents about 2,900 workers at Avaya. Larger locations include customer service centers in Atlanta, Oklahoma City and the Denver area. Other Avaya workers are in Anaheim, Calif., Dallas and Houston, Tex., Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, and the New York City metro area.
