CWA Begins Talks with Avaya

CWA opened negotiations with Avaya May 6, calling on the company to reach a fair and equitable agreement that safeguards members' jobs. This is the first round of contract talks since Avaya was spun off by Lucent Technologies in October 2000. The contract covers about 5,800 workers.

CWA Vice President Ralph Maly, communications and technologies, outlined bargaining goals and stressed that CWA members' hard work has paid off for Avaya in today's marketplace.

CWA and IBEW members "have demonstrated their ability to be creative and innovative" and have, through a unique partnership with Avaya, enabled the company to fully utilize a workforce that is second to none in both skill and ability while eliminating the threat of layoffs for the core technician workforce.

Maly also stressed the need for Avaya to understand the union's role in the future of the company if Avaya is to succeed. "Our members cannot and will not stand by and allow the company to move forward without the union being part of that future," he declared.

Avaya workers adopted bargaining goals at the communications and technologies leadership conference earlier this year. Safeguarding employment, retirement and health care security, along with improvements in compensation, are among the key goals.
