CWA Backs Sonia Sotomayor Supreme Court Nomination
Following is a statement by the officers and Executive Board of the Communications Workers of America on President Obama's nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court:
The Communications Workers of America, representing 700,000 working men and women, is proud to support the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court. In selecting her, President Obama has nominated an individual who has demonstrated critical understanding of the issues facing working families, and equally important, of how working people rely on the law for justice, whether for fair compensation or redress from workplace discrimination.
Her early life experience and later advocacy role for social change only add to the history-making nomination of the first Latina to serve on the high court.
She has a distinguished record as a prosecutor, litigator, trial court and appeals court judge, and it is this record and her life experiences of growing up in a working family that shape her decision-making.
It's also important to remember that Judge Sotomayor was first appointed to the bench by President George H.W. Bush in 1992 and that she has previously been confirmed by the Senate. This fact alone should stop the campaign of misinformation, distortion and outright lies that opponents are seeking to wage.
There have been many frivolous and insulting statements made about Judge Sotomayor by these opponents. The best way to put down these shameful and unwarranted attacks on her intellectual and judicial credentials is through a prompt Senate hearing process and confirmation. We call on the Senate to swiftly confirm this exceptionally well-qualified jurist to the Supreme Court.
