Washington, D.C. -- The Communications Workers of America commends Representative Rick Boucher (D-Va.) for his work to ensure that all Americans have access to high quality broadband.

Congressman Boucher has called on the Federal Communications Commission to include universal availability of true highspeed broadband as part of its National Broadband Plan.

Specifically, he has cited measures that "reduce the number of unserved households and substantially increase the broadband adoption rate as quickly as possible" and has called on the FCC to "explicitly endorse a goal for minimum broadband speeds, of at least 50 megabits downstream and 20 megabits upstream for 80 percent of the population by 2015." These "ambitious but achievable levels of speed and service" are critical to telemedicine, distance learning, telecommuting and other 21st century applications.

Congressman Boucher, like CWA's Speed Matters campaign, has been in the frontline of efforts to establish a national broadband policy, one that will ensure universal access to high speed broad for Americans and restore the 21st century network our nation needs to compete globally.

We applaud his commitment to our shared goals.
