CWA a Major Player in Dec. 10 Events Nationwide

From street theater to rallies and workers' rights hearings, CWA locals are working with Central Labor Councils to make Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day, and the week leading up to it a success from coast to coast.

Unions, joined by religious and social justice advocates, will put the spotlight on the erosion of workers' rights to organize and bargain collectively in the United States. "Workers' Rights are Human Rights" events are being planned in dozens of cities, with CWA playing major roles in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Jackson, Miss., Seattle, Denver, Oakland, Calif., Washington, D.C., Dayton, Ohio, St. Louis, Mo., and many others.

"In an age of McJobs and super-sized pink slips, workers need a voice on the job more than ever," AFL-CIO President John Sweeney said in a media advisory that went out Nov. 17. "Unions are the key to this nation's middle class, yet the right to come together in a union is a fundamental freedom that has been eroded beyond recognition. This December, workers and their communities are beginning a big new effort to take back working families' best shot at the American Dream."

Public outreach for Dec. 10 events includes a public service announcement recorded by NAACP Chairman Julian Bond.

"Workers' rights to join a union and bargain collectively are basic human rights. Yet every 23 minutes American workers are punished by corporate employers and the federal government for exercising their workplace rights," Bond says. "These ongoing workplace human rights violations are the major reasons why so many workers are denied good jobs, good wages and good health care benefits."

You can listen to three versions of Bond's statement at aflcio.org where you'll find a full toolkit of information to help you plan and publicize your local's Dec. 10 events. There's also an online calendar that tells you what other cities are doing and allows you to add your information.

Please be sure to tell the CWA News, too. If your event speakers include workers who have disciplined or fired in their fight for a union, please let us know. We are collecting workers' stories for our publications and outreach to reporters.

E-mail worker information, updates about your plans and any questions about publicity to writer/editor Janelle Hartman at jhartman@cwa-union.org. Or call (202) 434-1162.
